Pumpkin Picking

Pumpkins at the farm

This year we actually grew our own pumpkins, but we will probably go buy a couple anyway – just because the kids enjoy the outing.

There are many different locations around the twin cities with pumpkins available. Often apple orchards will also have pumpkins to pick. Here are a few locations:

Afton Apple Orchard

Applewood Orchard

Emma Krumbee’s Orchard and Farm

Fireside Orchard and Gardens

Peter’s Pumpkins & Carmen’s Corn

These are only a few suggestions – there are many more in the Twin Cities as well as markets to purchase pre-picked pumpkins. Once the pumpkins have been picked it is time to decorate. There are special kits available now with electric knives that simplify cutting the pumpkins face. There are also stickers and paints designed specifically for pumpkin decorating. These items are usually available where pumpkins are sold.

The seeds inside the  pumpkins can make wonderful snacks. Simply clean the seeds, remove all of the extra gunk and soak them for about 30 minutes. Drain the seeds and lay them flat on a baking dish that has been greased with butter or olive oil. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes at 400 degrees. Salt as desired. These make a great snack.

Enjoy your outing and your snack!
