The Mall of America opened its doors in 1992 and has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Twin Cities. The mall was the first to combine shopping with entertainment and has set the standard for other malls around the country and the world. With over 400 events held each year and 4.3 miles of storefront this mall is always filled with new sites and sounds. The Mall of America has 4 levels filled with stores, restaurants and a variety of entertainments.
Shopping at Mall of America
The Mall of America is a rectangle with a major department store anchoring each corner. The first floor is home to a large number of small kiosks selling everything from jewelry to the latest fad items. The mall is extremely large, .57 miles around each level, so it is a good idea to plan ahead for some rest stops. There are lockers available close to the main entrances, but these lockers can be difficult to come by as they are snapped up pretty quickly. The stores vary widely from big names such as Apple and Victoria’s Secret to smaller stores like Zumez and Lola. Shoppers may want to plan ahead to ensure they see the stores they really want to visit.
Entertainment at Mall of America
There are many venues of entertainment at the Mall of America. Nickelodeon Universe is an indoor amusement park, complete with roller coasters and water rides. Sea Life is a spectacular aquarium with underwater tunnels through shark filled tanks. Lego Land sells a huge variety of this popular toy, but also has an area where kids can make whatever they can imagine. Other levels have movie theaters, miniature golf, bars, and the house of comedy. There are also regularly scheduled events throughout the year. Appearances by music, movie, television and sports stars are frequent and often free. Check for specific events on any dates you plan to stop by the mall.
Food at the Mall of America
There are two main food courts on the third floor of the Mall of America. These courts are on opposite sides of the mall, north and south. There are also many sit down restaurants throughout the mall. Ranging in price and style from Bubba Gump Shrimp to Rainforest Café and California Café there is a great restaurant for almost any taste. Chocolate enthusiast should be sure to stop by the Godiva stores or Lindt ( a local favorite).
